Admission Arrangements

If you are interested in your child joining our school, you are more than welcome to contact the school office to arrange a look around. We can have an initial discussion with you and let you know whether we have spaces available in the year group you are looking for. Essex County Council is responsible for managing our admissions and appeals and all applications for a place are made through their website.

School Admissions Policy

The school admits pupils during the year that they reach the age of five. As Langham is a very small school, Reception aged children will join  Class 1, which also includes some Year 1 children. As of September 2011, it will be a matter of parental choice which term their children start Reception class. However, it is desirable for new reception pupils to have the best possible start in Primary School. Therefore we advocate the following procedures:

  • Children will start full-time from September.
  • At the beginning of the Autumn term, we advocate a “staggered start”, whereby for the first week all Reception pupils would be part-time i.e. attend only the morning session.
  • In a similar way, small groups of pupils would start sequentially each day, until all the reception pupils were inducted. This would allow the Class 1 staff to induct the pupils in a systematic and sympathetic manner.

In addition:

  • In the term before starting, we will invite all the prospective pupils to attend four, half-day induction sessions to aid familiarisation between staff and children.
  • Also during that term, parents will be invited to an “Introduction to new parents” meeting at the school and given an Induction folder which is full of information about the School and Class 1 in particular.
  • Prior to starting at our school it is envisaged that the Class 1 teacher will visit each child in their own early-years setting in order to gain valuable information about each pupil from relevant staff.

The Governors will admit children in each school year up-to, but not exceeding the school’s Published Admission Number (PAN). The PAN for this Langham Primary School is sixteen. The PAN refers to the number of children who may be admitted to the first year of entry in any academic year. If the number of requests exceeds the number of places available, the following criteria will be applied by Essex County Council Admissions Department  in the following order of priority:

  1. Looked after Children (LAC) ie children in Local Authority Care
  2. Children who live within the Priority admissions area and have brothers or sisters attending the school.
  3. Children who live within the Priority admissions area and do not have brothers or sisters attending the school.
  4. Children who live outside the Priority admissions area and have brothers or sisters attending the school.
  5. Children who live outside the Priority admissions area and do not have brothers or sisters attending the school.*

*In the case where children in category 5 are competing for a place, then straight line distance from the school will be used as the deciding factor.

Parents of children who are unsuccessful in gaining a place will be informed in writing by the LEA, and will be told of their right to appeal.  Parents who are considering sending their child to this school are encouraged to visit, by making an appointment to see the Headteacher.
