The school logo is the Discovery apple. Not only was the apple found in the village originally, but the bite out of it symbolises - "A small piece of information can lead onto greater things."

Brief introduction to Langham School

Langham Primary School is one of the smallest Primary Schools in the Colchester area with less than 100 children.

                            Buildings and Facilities

The original buildings date back to the 1840’s but were extended and completely remodelled in 1994 with extra additions in 1999.  There have been many changes to the school site in recent times with the addition of a new hall and classroom. The school has its own grounds that include a playground, large playing field, a fenced pond area and wildlife garden that are used to support the children’s curriculum.  There are: four classes; a library; office and staff room.  There is also an early years play area, constructed for use by our youngest pupils.

                    Organisation

In September 2009 there are approximately 86 children on roll.  As well as taking children from Langham village, approximately 40% of our children come from outside our catchment area.  This includes children coming from other villages as well as from the north of Colchester.  Each year we have more children apply to the school than we have available places, and we are now almost up to capacity.  The school is currently organised into four classes as follows;  Class 1: Rec. and Year 1 Class 2: Year 1 and Year 2 ,Class 3: Years 3 and 4 Class 4: Years 5 and 6.

The school has developed a cross-curricular thematic approach to teaching that ensures the delivery of the full National Curriculum, RE and PSHE. Recent themes include: 'The Power of Pattern' and 'Environmentally Speaking...'The whole school is currently working on the theme 'Time Traveller', which will culminate in a production of the play 'Uncle Crumble's Mad Machine'. All members of the teaching staff have a curriculum coordinator’s role and are given time and encouragement to develop their subject in school.

Standards at both KS1 and KS2 are well above the national average.  We have high expectations of the pupils. The school undertook a very successful Ofsted Inspection in September 2006, which highlighted the many strengths of the school and gave some direction for future improvements.

Community Links

Our parents are extremely supportive and interested in the school.  Staff benefit from their help in the classroom.  Parents are encouraged to play a full part in their children’s education and are kept informed through newsletters about the curriculum and the life of the school.  We have an active and hardworking PTA known as the “Friends of Langham School” that organises fundraising and social events.  The school enjoys a good relationship with the village Pre-school and has links with the local church and other village organisations. We also have links with Colchester Royal Grammar School, in particular with P.E., Mathematics and Science.

The village of Langham is an interesting place that was used as a US Air Force base during the Second World War. Children were evacuated to Langham Primary School during both the Second World War and the Spanish Civil War.
